This project involved the extension to and refurbishment of an early 1970s suburban detached house. The design approach was to develop a balanced relationship between the existing house and the contemporary work. The design intent – to use modest modifications to transform the interior of the house – included re-organising the living, dining and kitchen accommodation, and visually uniting the indoor and outdoor spaces in the conservatory extension.

Having established the deficiencies in the existing layout, a relocation of the kitchen from the rear of the house to the front was proposed, with a strong connection made to the small rear garden via a new conservatory.

Using a limited palette of materials, the clarity of the modern interior is juxtaposed with the existing house in a balanced relationship. New elements integrated into the existing house are unapologetically modern, creating a new standard of space and connection with the outside, which is the essence of the design.
