St. John Handley
BA (Hons) DipArch, RIBA
St.John is a Director of Scott Tallon Walker and has completed a wide range of new-build, refurbishment and conservation projects for universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland, working both with STW and previous employers. His portfolio includes a £15 million Student Accommodation scheme for Imperial College, London; the conservation and extension of the Grade 1 listed Senior Common Room at St John’s College, Oxford; and the West Cambridge Masterplan for the University of Cambridge.
Most recently, he has completed a 10,000sqm extension and refurbishment of the John Paul II Library at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth; which employs an innovative environmental strategy using an internal pond, fed by rainwater, as a heatsink for passive heating and cooling.
St.John’s particular experience in the design and procurement of specialist facades was further developed on this project, where the striking double-skinned façade enhances energy efficiency, controls day light penetration to the internal space and facilitates controlled natural ventilation.
The finished library displays a consistency and quality – common to all of St.John’s projects - which speak of his rigorous approach to detail design and active engagement on site throughout the construction process. His career to date has also included several high-profile residential and cultural projects.
St. John is responsible for STW's Architectural Graduate Scheme, acting as mentor to encourage and develop new staff joining our team.
